Petr Herel honoured in France

«In november 2009, Australian Artist Petr Herel was awarded France’s prestigious Jean Lurçat Prize for the artist’s book Séquelle. Since 2005 this juried prize has been presented annualy by the Academy of Fine Arts (L’Academie des Beaux-Arts, Institut de France) for ‘un ouvrage de bibliophilie’ (a book lover’s work) by a painter or printmaker. It is the only prize of its type in France.

The intriguing story of Séquelle’s lengthy gestation encompasses most of Herel’s professional career, stretching back to 1976, when he was living in Beaune and working in the intaglio editioning workshop at Fondation Maeght, Saint-Paul-de-Vence.

Finally, with the commitment of Pierre Walusinski, director  of Librairie Nicaise (the publisher), and Pierre-Marie Jamart and Guillaume Crouzet from la Zone Opaque (the printer), Herel’s prize-winning Séquelle was editionned in 2009.

After more three decades, Tardieu’s ‘Reductions’ and Herel’s images had finally merged, to a resounding endorsement from the juges of the Academie des Beaux-Arts.»
